Sue Pasco Memorial Tournament

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -- A mixed team from Hanover and North Country bested the field as 18 teams from nine Vermont schools kicked off the 2003-2004 season at the Sue Pasco Memorial Tournament on Sept. 20, 2003 at Essex High School.

The tournament was the sixth-annual kickoff tournament sponsored by Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl. The event was renamed this year in honor of the late Essex coach, Sue Pasco, who tragically died of cancer in December 2002. Pasco guided Hornets to two state championships (1995 and 2002) and two runner-up finishes (1990 and 1998) in her long tenure at Essex.

Hanover/North Country went 8-2 on the day, losing in both the preliminary and playoff rounds to St. Johnsbury B. But that was St. Johnsbury B's only playoff win and Hanover/North Country stood as the only 4-1 team in the playoffs. St. Johnsbury A (7-3 overall), Essex (8-2 overall) and Champlain Valley (8-2 overall) all were 3-2 in the playoffs, with St. Johnsbury finishing second and Essex third on points per game. Colchester (5-5 overall) beat out SJA B (6-4) for fith with a head-to-head win.

In the morning, teams were divided into three groups of six, with each team playing the others in its group. The top two teams in each group advanced to the "A" playoff group to play for the title in the afternoon. In the Prelims, Essex, Champlain Valley and St. Johnsbury B posted perfect 5-0 records to win their groups. Hanover/North Country, St. Johnsbury A and Colchester qualified for the "A" playoffs with 4-1 records.

Champlain B ran the table in the "B" playoffs to finish in seventh place overall, with Montpelier B (3-2) beating out Burlington A on head-to-head results for second. A mixed team from Essex and St. Johnsbury was 5-0 in the "C" playoffs with Lake Region A second.

Thanks to all teams for attending and providing an exciting event. A special thanks to all the parents and friends for giving up their Saturday to moderate games.
