Bay State Quiz Bowl Classic
BOSTON -- Eighteen teams from four states competed in the Bay State Quiz Bowl Classic IV on December 8, 2001, but in the end it came down to two Vermont rivals.
Hanover High School prevailed 250-130 in the deciding game to beat Burlington High School two games to one in the best-of-three final series to capture the NAQT regional tournament, held at Boston University.
Hanover dominated its preliminary round group, scoring 353 points per game in posting a perfect 5-0 record. Burlington found the going a little tougher in its group, and needed an overtime victory in the final round to finish at 4-1 and advance to the top playoff group.
In the six-team playoff group both Vermont teams shined. Hanover edged Burlington head-to-head, 275-250, but lost to Needham (Mass.) while Burlington won all of its other games. That left both with 4-1 records and sent them into the final series to decide the championship.
A Hanover surge midway through the second half broke open a tight game and the Marauders hung on for a 230-205 victory in the first game. In game two, Burlington scored the last two toss-ups to rally for a 190-130 win and force a deciding game. But in the final game, Hanover hit six straight toss-ups for a convincing 250-130 win and the championship.
With their strong performances, both schools earned automatic bids to the NAQT National Championship Tournament in Austin, Texas and the PACE National Scholastics Championship in Washington, D.C.
Hanover's Niall Prendergast also earned individual honors, ending up as the tournament's leading scorer with 45.77 points per game.
Burlington's B team also competed in the tournament and finished with a 7-5 mark. The BHS B's went 3-2 in the preliminary round and 2-3 in the second playoff group, then swept Needham B in its seeding matches to finish in 11th place.
