SCHOOL: 2019-20 SMALL-SCHOOL CHAMPION
The team from Cabot School defeated Woodstock, 320-235, to win the Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl small-school championship for the second straight year. Cabot was one of nine schools that qualified for the overall state finals before they had to be canceled due to the Corona Virus Pandemic.
|Essex Earns Ninth Scholars' Bowl
Essex High School is the Vermont-NEA champion after scoring a pair of narrow, come-from-behind victories in online matches on March 20th to secure its record ninth state championship. The Hornets trailed Hanover by 45 points early in the final rond of the state finals, but EHS gave seven of the last eight correct answers to rally for a 225-180 victory. Essex also had to rally in the semifinals, trailing by as much as 55 before riding a perfect final round to nip CVU 245-230. The other semifinal was also a thriller, with Hanover needing to get the last question to clinch a 255-235 win over South Burlington. Lyndon won the Medlar Cup, the tourament's second-tier crown, with wins over Lamoille and BFA-St. Albans before falling to CVU in the quarterfinals. The other quarterfinals saw South Burlington top Burlington and Essex beat BFA-St. Albans. Essex, which finishes the season with a 15-2 record in league play, earns the right to represent Vermont in national competition in May or June.
