Sue Pasco Opening Tournament
ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -- The 2005-06 season began Sept. 24 with an exciting day of competition in the Sue Pasco Opening Tournament at Essex High School, and a quartet of teams dominated the action.
Talented and equally matched squads from Champlain Valley, Essex, St. Johnsbury and Hanover asserted themselves early by winning their morning groups before squaring off in a tight playoff showdown for the title in the afternoon. The race went to the final round of matches with all four teams still in contention, and CVU and Essex picked up wins to top the standings at 3-1. The Redhawks' head-to-head victory gave them first place.
CVU finished the day with a 9-1 record, losing only to Hanover in the fourth of five playoff matches. The Redhawks rebounded with a 320-205 victory over St. Johnsbury -- its second victory of the day over the 2005 state champions -- in the final round and claimed the title when Essex (8-2) came back to beat Hanover in a 335-325 thriller at the same time.
Hanover finished at 8-2 overall and both of its losses were narrow. In addition to the 10-point defeat to Essex, the Marauders (the tournament's top scoring team at 347 points per game) dropped a 175-170 decision to St. Johnsbury. That head-to-head victory gave the Hilltoppers (7-3) third place when both teams finished 2-2 in their playoffs group.
BFA-Fairfax also qualified for the top playoff group and finished in fifth place. South Burlington B, CVU B and South Burlington A finished in first place in the lower playoff groups, with the latter two teams posting perfect 5-0 playoff records.
Other participating schools were Burlington, Harwood, Montpelier, Lake Region, Fair Haven and Colchester.
