ESSEX JUCTION, Vt. -- Champlain Valley avenged preliminary-round losses by defeating Burlington and Hanover in the playoffs to capture the 4th annual Vermont-NEA Scholars' Bowl Kickoff Tournament at Essex High School on September 15, 2001.

The Crusaders lost 125-95 to Hanover and 140-125 to Burlington in going 4-2 in the prelims and earning the third seed in the ten-team field. But in the playoffs, CVU beat Montpelier 200-30 in the quarterfinals, Burlington 85-55 in the semis, and Hanover 230-110 in the championship game to take the title.

Hanover and Burlington each went 5-1 in prelims to earn the top two seeds while Oxbow and Colchester joined CVU in going 4-2. In the quarterfinals, Hanover defeated a mixed team from Burlington and Essex Middle School, Burlington beat a mixed team from CVU and Oxbow, and Oxbow downed Colchester. Hanover earned its berth in the championship game with a 100-60 semifinal win over Oxbow.

Burlington defeated Oxbow in the consolation game to claim third place while Essex, which lost numerous close games in going 0-6 in the prelims, won all three of its ladder-play playoffs to take the fifth position.

The tournament, which opened the 2001-2002 season, featured games 15 minutes in length with rounds of toss-ups and bonuses, and all toss-ups.
